Discipline Code:080100 Discipline Level:First Order
1.Program Objectives
Students are trained to:
-Acquire the solid and extensive basic theories and systematic expertise of the Mechanics;
-Understand the academic situation and development directions in China and the world;
-Master fundamental theory, experimental theory and calculation techniques in related fields of Mechanics;
-Have a relative strong foundation in mathematics and physics;
-Have the ability to independently analyze and handle scientific and technological issues in Mechanics;
-Have excellent computer skills; and,
-Master a foreign language.
2.Discipline Introduction and Research Orientations
As the first-order discipline,Mechanics covers such four second-order disciplines as Solid Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, General Mechanics, and Fundamentals of Mechanics. Solid Mechanics was authorized to confer Master and Ph.D. degrees in 1981 and 1998 respectively. Mechanics was accredited as the first-order discipline with authorization to confer Ph.D. degrees in 2005, and a postdoctoral research station for Mechanics was approved in 2003. The postgraduate education has lasted 36 years. Mechanics is the first-order discipline and the key discipline of Hunan Province, and Solid Mechanicshas been accredited as a key discipline by the former Ministry of Machine Industry of the P.R.C. There are now 13 professors (including 2 supported by the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, and 2 Changjiang Scholars Program visiting and distinguished professors), and over 10 associate professors in Mechanics. A “Large-scale Engineering Scientific Computing” Graduate Innovation Base of Hunan Province was established for Mechanics. In recent five years, more than 40 national and over 60 ministerial and provincial-level scientific research projects have been undertaken in Mechanics and over 400 scientific papers have been published, among which over 300 articles have been included in SCI, EI and ISTP.
