2.Discipline Introduction and Research Orientations
Mechanical engineering as a first-order discipline covers four second-order disciplines: mechanical manufacturing and automation; mechatronics engineering; mechanical design and theory; and, vehicle engineering. Hunan University has centurial mechanical engineering education since 1909. In 1981 and 1986, it was authorized to confer master’s degree in mechanical manufacturing and automation, and vehicle engineering. In 1990 and 1993, it was authorized to confer doctoral vehicle engineering, and mechanical manufacturing and automation were authorized to confer doctorate in vehicle engineering, and mechanical manufacturing automation. In 2003, it was authorized to award doctorate in mechanical engineering as a first-order discipline, and approved to launch post-doctoral research program. Its mechanical engineering discipline was approved as a national key discipline in 2007, and ranked sixth in national first-order discipline ranking in 2012. The postgraduate program has a 36-year history.
There are two academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, one member of the National Academy of Engineering of U.S.A and also a distinguished professor of Hunan University, two professors included in the national "Thousand Talent Program", one candidate for the "Thousand Foreign Experts Program", andfourfor the "Thousand Young Talent Program",twodistinguished and chair professors of the Changjiang Scholars Program, oneNational 863 Program expert, fourteachers supported by the national outstanding youth fund, twoLotus Scholars, and 14 professors supported by the Ministry of Education’s Program for New Century Excellent Talents in University.
The College of Mechanical Engineering has several national, ministerial and provincial scientific research institutions, including National Engineering Research Center for High Efficiency Grinding; State Key Laboratory of Advanced Design and Manufacturing of Vehicle Body; Mechanical Engineering Experimental Teaching Center; and, Mechanical Engineering Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Center. These have laid a solid foundation for its postgraduate education. In recent years, the college has won five national awards including the first prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, and more than 40 ministerial and provincial awards for its mechanical engineering discipline; published more than 1,500 related papers; and, held more than 120 invention patents.
The College has established stable and long-term partnership with American, German, and Britain universities in joint training programs for mechanical engineering postgraduates.
